How Much Does a Katana Cost? Real Prices From 684 Listings

Most buyers arrive with the same question and a bad answer in mind: somewhere between "a few hundred dollars" and "a fortune". The useful answer is a range with reasons attached. We pulled the current prices from every listing in our own catalog — 684 active products on 22 October 2026 — and grouped them by sword type so you can see what each class actually costs here.

Quick answer

An entry-level functional katana in our catalog starts at $195. The median katana listing is $296. The top of the range reaches $2,229 for complex builds. Custom builds start from a $269.99 base with components added in the configurator, and a mystery box ranges from $155 to $663 depending on tier.

What actually moves the price

1. Steel and heat treatment

The biggest single step is the steel and how it is heat treated. 1045 and 1060 carbon steel sit at the entry end; 1065, T10 and folded pattern steel move up; clay tempering with a real hamon adds another step because the blade is coated, differentially hardened and polished by hand afterwards. Our katana steel guide explains the difference between these steels, and the steel types comparison puts them side by side.

2. Length and blade style

Longer blades cost more to forge and to polish. A tachi in our catalog has a median price of $503 against $296 for katana, and that gap is mostly length, curvature and fitting work rather than rarity.

3. Fittings, saya and polish

Iron tsuba, brass fittings, ray-skin wrap, lacquered hardwood saya and the number of polishing stages all add cost. Two listings with the same steel can differ by a few hundred dollars on fittings alone.

4. Edge option

Functional swords here are ordered with a sharpness option: hand sharpened, or unsharpened for display and training. The edge you choose is a delivery decision, not a different blade. All listings that offer the choice are collected in our sharpened katana range.

5. Custom work

A custom build starts from a $269.99 base and the configurator adds components — blade steel, fittings, wrap, saya finish, inscription. Because the configuration defines the order, the builder or quotation is the price, not a general figure. See the custom Japanese swords we build.

What to check before you compare prices

  • Weight and length in the spec table — a heavier or longer blade is more work, and the spec row tells you what you are paying for.
  • Whether the edge is included or an option — an unsharpened display piece and a cutting-ready blade are different products at the same nominal price point.
  • Whether the sword is in stock or made to order — custom and made-to-order builds carry production time, not a premium.
  • Shipping and duties at checkout — the destination decides the landed cost far more than the listing price does.

The short version

If you want a functional katana to handle and cut with, the realistic budget in our catalog is $200–$400. Between $400 and $800 you start paying for steel, hamon and fittings. Above that you are buying length, polish and custom work. Browse the full katana collection and filter by the specification you care about rather than by the headline price.
