How to Use

Samurai Sword Maintenance Knowledge

The scabbard of a samurai sword is made from multiple layers of lacquer. Occasionally, wiping it with a soft cloth will keep it shiny. When holding the scabbard, grip the upper outer part to avoid touching the lacquered areas, as even small marks can dull the finish.

Maintaining the blade is crucial for keeping it in perfect condition. The maintenance kit helps you keep your samurai sword in the same condition as when you first bought it. Blade maintenance should be performed at least once every three months, or each time after handling the blade (as oils from the skin can corrode the steel).

Samurai Sword Maintenance Tips

  1. Use a piece of rice paper to remove protective oil from the blade, keeping the edge away from yourself and handling with great care to avoid injury. (Note: If rice paper is not available, a soft cotton cloth can be used)
  2. Tap the uchiko ball (filled with talcum powder) lightly along the length of the blade every two inches (approximately 5 cm), gently distributing the powder onto the blade surface. Use a clean piece of rice paper or cotton cloth to carefully wipe away the powder, making the blade shine. Repeat this process on both sides of the blade.
  3. Apply a few drops of choji oil along the length of the blade, and use a piece of rice paper (nuguigami) or a soft cloth to spread the oil evenly. Ensure not to touch the blade before resheathing the sword.

Note on Powder Types

This kit uses talcum powder inside the uchiko ball. Talcum powder is very soft and gentle, making it ideal for beginners and safe for regular cleaning. It helps absorb oil and moisture, but does not have polishing properties.

Traditional Japanese maintenance kits often use Hon-metsuna-ko, a fine powder made from polishing stones. Hon-metsuna-ko contains microscopic abrasive particles, which can lightly polish the blade and remove minor oxidation, but it is more expensive and usually reserved for advanced collectors or professional polishers.

👉 In summary:
- Talcum powder: Gentle, safe, suitable for daily maintenance (included in this kit).
- Hon-metsuna-ko: Traditional, professional-grade powder with polishing ability (not included).

Additional Notes

Will talcum powder damage the blade?
No. Talcum powder is extremely soft (Mohs hardness ~1), much softer than steel. It will not scratch or damage the blade surface. Instead, it gently absorbs oil and moisture, making it safe for daily cleaning. This is why we use talcum powder in our maintenance kit — it is beginner-friendly and provides reliable protection without risk.

Why not use Hon-metsuna-ko?
Hon-metsuna-ko is the traditional polishing powder made from fine whetstone particles. It has light abrasive qualities, which can remove minor oxidation and bring out a brighter polish. However, it is more expensive, harder to source, and generally used by advanced collectors or professional polishers. For everyday care, talcum powder is safer and more practical.

Historical note: Since the Edo period (17th–19th century), traditional sword maintenance in Japan has followed the same principle — carefully wiping the blade clean and then applying protective oil, sometimes with the aid of uchiko powder. What we use today is a continuation of those centuries-old methods, adapted for modern collectors.
